‘My Husband Is A Cultist,’ Divorce-seeking Woman Says

Grace Okonwa, a 56-year-old businesswoman, has urged a Customary Court sitting in the Agege area of Lagos state, to dissolve her 33-year-old marriage.

Grace, who hails from Agbor in Delta, told the court on Friday, that her husband, Macaulay Okonwa was a cultist.

“My husband belongs to the ogboni confraternity, he is devilish and demonic,” she said.

“Whenever my husband has sexual intercourse with me, my stomach becomes swollen and when l go to the hospital for check-up, it is confirmed there is nothing wrong with me.”

The mother of six, who resides at Command, in the Ipaja area of Lagos state, alleged that Macaulay attacks her and the children spiritually. She claimed that her husband has used his devilish powers to stop them from getting married.

The petitioner also told the court that she only enjoyed her marriage for a few years as Macaulay fornicates and assault her.

“My husband has turned me to a punching bag. He usually beats me to a pulp, tears my clothes,” she said.

"I moved out of the house sometimes in 1994 when the beatings and embarrassment became unbearable but after much pleading by his family members and his promise to change, l returned in 1996."

The petitioner further said that "his lifestyle became worse as he sometimes refused to come home for months.”

She added that, "my husband became a chronic fornicator, sleeping with different women without any form of care and when l complain, he beats me mercilessly.”

Grace urged the court to dissolve the marriage so that she and her children can live a successful and peaceful life.

"I am no longer interested in the union; I want to live comfortably and in peace with my children,” the petitioner said.

"I also want my husband to stop attacking me and my children both spiritually and physically."

Newsbreak.ng reports that the respondent refused to appear in court after being served on several occasions.

Ibironke Elabor, the court’s president, advised the estranged wife to desist from believing that anybody can lay hold of her life. She urged the petition to remain strong for the sake of her children.

Elabor, adjourned the case until August 14 for judgment.
