A 13-year-old boy, (name withheld) on Friday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating up a 12-year-old neighbour and pushed her down the stairway. Tommy, a student, who lives with his parents at Dopemu, Agege, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for assault. The accused committed the offence on May 31 at his parent’s residence, the Police Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court. He said the accused assaulted the girl (name withheld) by pushing her down the stairs, causing her injury on her left hand. “The accused, after beating the girl, deliberately pushed her down the stairs, breaking her left hand.” Ayorinde said the accused attacked the girl because following a fight which broke out between both mothers. “The accused’s mother was fighting the girl’s mother and the accused decided to deal with the girl.” According to the prosecutor, the girl’s mother reported the case at the police station and the accused was arrested. The offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The section prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. In her ruling, the Magistrate, B.O. Osunsanmi, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The case was adjourned until July 23.
