Asaba Stadium Will Host Super Eagles Matches – Okowa

Ifeanyi Okowa, the Delta State Governor, has said the newly completed Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, which is currently hosting the 21st African Athletics Championship, will host some matches of the Super Eagles in the future. Okowa promised that the stadium will be put to judicious use after the competition. He said, “We are already talking with the NFF (Nigeria Football Federation). They want to see how CAF can certify the stadium and if they do, occasionally, some of the matches of our Eagles can also come to this place. So we are working hard, we want to put it(stadium) into great use.” The state government completed the facility under one year after 20 years of delay and abandonment. But the stadium has come under severe criticisms by both athletes and journalists due to what they described as poor facilities and its inadequate state of readiness to host a continental athletics championship of such magnitude. Earlier this week, a water tanker located inside the stadium collapsed. While no one was injured, the fallen tanker, however, severely damaged some cars parked within the vicinity as well as parts of the stadium fence.
