EFCC Frees Ex-DSS DG, Ekpenyong

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has released Ita Ekpenyong, a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, from its custody.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Ekpenyong was freed by the anti-graft agency hours after he was arrested on Thursday afternoon at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

EFCC operatives, in the company of armed policemen, had arrested Ekpenyong at about 3:20 pm after searching his hours for over two hours.

The reason for the search and arrest are not known but it was reported that it was approved by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

This is the second time that the EFCC would swoop on the former DSS DG after its first attempt in 2014.

It was speculated that Lawal Daura, the recently sacked DSS DG, had blocked the EFCC operatives from arresting Ekpenyong, who served as the head of the spy agency between 2010 to 2015.
