Abubakar Shehu-Tambuwal, a former Chairman of the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday reportedly led over 10,000 persons in defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Shehu-Tambuwal informed a large crowd of supporters that the decision to join the APC was based on their own free volition, noting that the ruling party had the capacity to provide development for the state, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Shehu-Tambuwal, who is also a former commissioner for Education in the state, said the performance of the APC-led government at the centre inspired the defectors to make the bold move in the interest of the state's development.
Umar Maitafsir, Chairman of APC chapter in Tambuwal Local Government Area of the state, hailed Shehu-Tambuwal's defection to the party as “a landmark in the political history of Sokoto South senatorial district.”
He also disclosed that about 100,000 people from Yabo, Kebbi, Tureta, Dange/Shuni, Bodinga and Shagari local government areas of the state had also decamped from the PDP to the APC.
Meanwhile, Sadiq Achida, the state APC Chairman, while welcoming the new members, assured them of a level playing field in the party.
