Ugochukwu Osuagwu, a lawyer and human rights activist, has called on Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to obey court order by appearing before the federal high court in Abuja. Osuagwu is reacting to the order given by Justice Stephen Pam of the Federal High Court, ordering the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest and bring Yakubu to court for refusing to obey a valid order court. While speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, the lawyer explained that there were three orders issued by Justice Pam requesting that the INEC chairman should appear before him. He pointed out that disobedience to obey court order and disrespect for the judiciary was a call for anarchy, adding that it is wrong for the federal government appointees to disobey court orders. “With the coming of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act Section 306, there is no more provision for a lawyer or litigant to file an application for stay of proceedings. It has been prohibited.” Meanwhile, reacting to this development when contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, questioned why Osuagwu should be speaking on matter that was before the court.
