Ben Murray Bruce, the Senator representing Bayelsa East senatorial district, has told the All Progressives Congress, APC, that Senators on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are "fighting for democracy" and not to defend the personal interest of Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President.
Senator Murray-Bruce stated this on Saturday via Twitter in reaction to calls from the APC leadership asking Senator Saraki to resign his position as Senate President, following his defection to the PDP.
The Bayelsa Senator asked the APC to halt any "illegal" measures it may want to use to remove Senator Saraki from office.
He demanded the ruling party resort to legal means to impeach the Senate President, provided they have the requisite numbers to do so.
Senator Murray-Bruce tweeted, "The APC Federal Government must not misunderstand my colleagues in the PDP and I. We are not fighting for @BukolaSaraki, we are fighting for democracy. If they can impeach Saraki legally then they should do so and stop any forceful, illegal and undemocratic attempt at impeachment."
The Senator's statement is coming in the wake of the lawmakers' resumption on Tuesday after halting their recess to consider issues of national importance.
