A 44-year-old woman, Zainab Suara, was on Friday arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing three bags of melon valued N100, 000.
The stolen melon is said to be owned by one Awawu Shonga.
“The accused bought three bags of melon from Shonga two years ago and absconded to Ghana,” Hafsat Ajibode, the police prosecutor told the court.
“On July 17, the complainant saw her at a Police Post in Lagos Island and got her arrested.”
She said that the accused committed the offence on April 14, 2016, at Shop 41, Oja Oba Lane, under Bridge, in the Lagos Island. The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
But the defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges of theft preferred against her.
In his ruling, Tajudeen Elias, the Chief Magistrate, granted the accused bail of N100, 000 with a responsible surety in like sum.
Elias said the surety should be gainfully employed and must be a relation to the accused.
The case was adjourned till August 16, 2018, for mention.
