Premier League: Liverpool Edge Stubborn Palace, Man United Beat Brighton


Ten-man Liverpool secured a nervy 4-3 win against a difficult Crystal Palace at Anfield in Saturday’s Premier League game to boost their chance of winning the league.

Palace took a shock lead thanks to Andros Townsend’s 34th minute goal.

Liverpool came fired up in the second half and were rewarded with a Mohamed Salah equaliser a minute after the restart. 

In the 53rd minute, Roberto Firmino put Liverpool in front but James Tomkins made it 2-2 in the 66th minute.

Firmino’s goal was Liverpool’s 1000th Premier League goal at Anfield and they are now the fourth team to score 1,000 plus home league goals after Manchester United (1,094), Arsenal (1,041) and Chelsea (1,005).

With 15 minutes left, Liverpool went 3-2 up through Salah,  who bagged his second goal of the game.

Liverpool were reduced to 10 men as James Milner was sent off on 89 minutes for his second yellow card.

Despite going a man down, it was Liverpool who scored through Sadio Mane to make it 4-2 on 94th minute.

And in the 95th minute, Palace got a consolation goal from Max Meyer to make it 4-3.

Liverpool now go seven points clear on 60 points in the and will hope second place Manchester City drop points away to Huddersfield Town on Sunday.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United recorded their seventh straight win following a 2-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion.

United broke the deadlock in the 27th minute thanks to Paul Pogba who scored from the penalty spot.

In the 42nd minute, Rashford extended United’s lead as he made it 2-0 but Brighton reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute through Pascal Gross.

Nigerian defender Leon Balogun was an unused substitute for Brighton.

The win temporarily took United to fifth on 44 points above Arsenal who will host Chelsea in the last game of the Saturday fixtures.

And at aged 21 years and 80 days, Rashford is the youngest United player to score in four successive Premier League appearances 

He has now scored his eighth league goal this season, in his 20th appearance making it his highest scoring campaign in the competition.  He has now surpassed seven goals in 35 appearances last season.

In other results, Southampton beat visiting Everton 2-1, West Ham lost 2-0 away to Bournemouth, Newcastle thrashed Cardiff 3-0 and Watford played 0-0 at home against Burnley.

And in the early kick-off at the Molineaux, Wolverhampton Wanderers edged Leicester City 4-3.

It was Leicester’s third straight defeat in all competitions

Nigerian internationals, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, were in action for Leicester.
