Tax Fraud: Ronaldo Gets Two-year Suspended Sentence, €18.8m Fine

Cristiano Ronaldo has pleaded guilty to tax evasion in a Madrid court.

The Juventus has been sentenced to a two-year suspended jail term and will pay €18.8 million as fine. Ronaldo, who attended the proceeding on Tuesday with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, was said to have agreed the deal with the court before the sitting.

Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, was accused of avoiding paying tax during his time at Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid between 2011 and 2014.

The case is about the former Manchester United winger’s lucrative image rights deals while he was in Spain. Prosecutors say the proceeds were channeled through low-tax companies in foreign countries, so as to avoid paying the required tax.

The amount was reported to be up to $15 million.
