Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately resume and conclude the collation of result for the state governorship election.
Governor Wike, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, said this when Uche Secondus, PDP National Chairman, led other members of the party’s National Working Committee on a solidarity visit to Government House, Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The governor alleged that some of the other contestants in the election tried to use the judiciary to disrupt the electoral process but subsequently failed in their bid.
He, however, expressed concern that the security agencies are allegedly harassing electoral officers in charge of the collation of results.
This, he said, was to ensure that the true result of the election is not declared.
Governor Wike said: “Attempts have been made to stop collation as announced by INEC. This morning the political parties that contested the elections with us, have all gone to court to seek for stopping of collation. But the court did not grant them.
“But we prefer the move because it is the due process. The pain is the antics by security agencies trying to intimidate collation and electoral officers, inviting them for one offence of the other so as to impede on the collation of results.”
He added: “The Police is trying to intimidate Collation and Electoral Officers by inviting them for one offence or the other so as to impinge on the Collation Process.
“Imagine where the police is inviting the entire Returning Officers, the entire electoral Officers and Entire Electoral Officers because allegations have been made against the INEC officials. This is just to let the entire world see what we are talking about.”
Governor Wike, however, declared that a victory for the PDP in Rivers State will be the “sweetest” of all governorship elections conducted on March 9.
“Like I said, this victory will be the best. It will be the sweetest amongst all the states. That is what I see coming. There is no election that will be held in this state and another party will win.
“In the end, PDP will emerge victorious in this State. It is a victory that can be delayed, but not denied,” he said.
