The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lamented about the functionality of the Peace Committee, saying that it cannot function under an “unruly” and “lawless” government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP National Publicity Secretary, stated the party’s position at a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
The committee, which is headed by Abdulsalami Abubakar, a former military head of state, majorly undertakes peace and reconciliatory activities in the country, especially during the electioneering period.
The committee facilitated the signing of a peace accord between the two major presidential candidates for the 2019 general election: PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and the eventual winner, President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, the PDP said despite the peace committee’s efforts to ensure harmony in the country, it cannot function without getting the required cooperation and support from the current Federal Government.
Reminiscing about the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan, the opposition party spokesman noted that the current government has “no respect for rules” and has, therefore, stifled the committee’s operations.
Ologbondiyan said: “The committee will only function within an ambit of what the sitting government desires.
“If a sitting government refuses to partner with the peace committee and chooses to act against the rule, the peace committee has no power to get the sitting government to act in conjunction with their own principles.
“So I’m not surprised that the peace committee has somewhat found itself in the kind of environment it is in. It is a different environment from what we had under President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 and 2015.
“We are dealing with people who have no respect for rules. We are dealing with people who are prepared to manoeuvre their ways just to be in government.”
