An Abia lawmaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Francis Ifeanyi Uchendu, has been accused of certificate forgery. A petition written to the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, against him by one Goodness Kalu Agbai alleged that the lawmaker presented a fake degree certificate in Marketing from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and NYSC certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission while he was being screened. He said he also failed his Senior School Certificate Examination with only a credit in English Language and had finished in 1999 as against 2000 stated on his certificate. Uchendu was accused of using the documents to contest for the 2011 general election when he first contested for the Ohafia South State Constituency seat.
The petitioner, Agbai, said he decided to write to the IG and copied the Presidency, Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives because he was scared of the negative impact Uchendu was going to make in the society with a background of forgery and knowledge of a forgery syndicate. He urged the police to investigate and prosecute him. He also went further to accuse Uchendu of bragging that he could buy his way out of the case with the help of his in-law who is a judge in the state.
Arase has ordered the Abia State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the case.
