Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, have qualified for the final of the football event at the 12th All Africa Games after defeating Mali 5-4 on penalties in Tuesday’s semi-final.

The game went into penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 0-0.

The Flying Eagles had the chance to open scoring in the 21st minute after they were awarded a penalty but skipper Ibrahim Abubakar’s effort was saved.

They will now meet either Burkina Faso or Senegal in the final on Friday.

The last time a Nigerian men’s football team qualified for the final of the All Africa Games was at the 2003 edition in Abuja. They lost 2-0 to Cameroon in the final played at the Abuja National Stadium.

Nigeria’s only gold medal in the men’s football event of the games was in 1973 hosted in Lagos.

Also, Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, qualified for the final after defeating Algeria 3-0 in Monday’s semi-final.
