APC Governors Make U-turn, Back Buhari On Tenure Elongation

The state governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have reversed their earlier position and agreed with President Muhammadu Buhari’s stand on tenure elongation. The governors, had in a meeting on Tuesday, disagreed with Buhari after he declared the  tenure elongation of the party’s executive members illegal.

Those who met the President on Wednesday include governors of Zamfara, Abdulazeez Yari; Plateau, Simon Lalong; Imo, Rochas Okorocha; Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje and Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun. Yari told reporters at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, that the 24 governors under the party had resolved to follow the President and obey the party’s constitution. He also siad a committee chaired by Simon Lalong would submit its report later today.  He said that the governors are also meeting with the working committee today to come up with convention committee names as well as timetable of the election.

Okorocha added that the decision to hold congress and convention did not mean that those who have so far held those positions have done badly. He said the decision also did not mean that the outgoing officials cannot re-contest.

Newsbreak.ng had earlier reported that President Buhari had, at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting,  rejected the extension of the tenures of the party’s National Working Committee. He described the move as illegal and a breach of the party’s constitution.
