David Beckham has made contact with Lionel Messi over a move to his Major League Soccer franchise, Inter Miami, a report has said.
According to Catalunya Radio, the England legend has reached out to the Barcelona captain for a huge deal, so he would be the leading face of the club.
However, while the purported approach has been regarded by Messi as “interesting”, his representatives have quoted huge demands, which could rue out the move, the report also said.
Barcelona’s directors are said to be aware of the interest, as Beckham looks for ‘big names’ to spearhead the franchise in its formative years.
Bartomeu, who disclosed the clause, however, downplayed the chances of their superstar leaving amid reports they plan to offer him a lifetime contract.
“I doubt he’d want to play for another club, but he has earned liberty over his future,” Bartomeu said.
“He’s a big Barca fan and I have no doubt he’ll want to continue until 2021 and we hope another year too,” Bertomeu said.
Beckham admitted to having a “wish list” of great footballers for Inter when discussing the club earlier this year. Although he said the likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could be unrealistic targets at their current level.
“Everyone has their wish list,” Beckham was quoted as saying.
“But if you look at the way Leo and Cristiano are still playing, even at what you might think is the later stage of their careers, I don’t see it ending for them.
“They’re playing at such a high level that it’s hard to see them leaving the clubs they are at. But we will see. You never know what can happen in football.”
