Benue To Conduct Chairmanship, Councillorship Elections Despite COVID-19 Outbreak

The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, has insisted that it will go ahead to conduct elections into chairmanship and councillorship positions on Saturday (today), despite the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

According to Channels Television, chairman of the state electoral body, Loko Tersoo Joseph, noted that preventive measures such as physical distancing of 1.5 meters will be observed between each voter, while washing of hands with soap and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers will be encouraged.

The election was initially scheduled to take place in November 2019, but was shifted due to logistics reasons, with the outbreak of the pandemic further complicating the conduct of the elections.

Nigeria currently has a total number of 9,302 confirmed cases of the virus.

However, Benue has one of the least number of infections of all the 36 states.

Benue has only seven cases so far.
