Boko Haram terrorists killed five persons in the convoy of Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway around Auno, some kilometres to Maiduguri.
The incident was said to have happened while Sheriff was traveling to Maiduguri from Abuja for the third day post-burial prayer for his father, Galadima Sheriff, on Thursday evening.
During the attack, two policemen, two civilians and one soldier were killed.
The Punch reports that a source said the former governor, who has been threatened a number of times by the terrorists, had been traveling in a convoy of nine exotic vehicles before they were trailed by the terrorists who unleashed terror around 6:30pm.
The source added that one of the nine vehicles was damaged at Auno as the convoy was rescued by a team of the Rapid Response Squad deployed to Njimtilo to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown.
