BREAKING: Buhari Declares Re-Election Bid

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared his intention to run for a second term of office. Buhari, who is billed to travel to London on Monday, told the National Executive Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress of his desire.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has just officially announced his intention to seek re-election in 2019,” says Bashir Ahmad, a presidential Assistant on New Media.

The President’s declaration comes days after Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje vowed governors of the APC stock would sue Buhari, if he ignored their pressure on him to contest. Many political watchers believed that President Buhari’s statements at different fora in the past had shown he would seek re-election. Buhari’s second term bid precedes mounting criticisms against his perceived ineptitude and administrations’ inability to deliver to Nigerians the change promised.

Notable among the opposition to President Buhari’s re-election bid is former Nigerian leader, Olusegun Obasanjo. Obasanjo, a former head of state and, later, president, faulted President Buhari’s handling of the country’s economy, security and his management of the farmers-herders clash. Obasanjo urged Buhari to perish any thought of running again for office, but to join hands with other statesmen in rebuilding the country.

Also, former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) in an open – which he allegedly denied later – asked Buhari to yield the political space for the younger generation. Babangida said the various incessant bloodlettings had made Nigeria a killing field.

Moreover, some leaders of North, representing different organisations, had delivered an unfavourable verdict on northern public office holders, including Buhari. The northern group said the region was currently worse off than it previously was.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has been unrelenting in urging voters to ditch the president, advertising itself as capable of providing worthy alternative if voted back into power.

However, President Buhari has claimed his administration had achieved many of its campaign promises and put Nigeria on a recovery path.
