Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service and some smugglers reportedly clashed in Ajilete Village, Ipokia Local Government Area of the State on Sunday, killing one person.
It was gathered that the smugglers smuggled about three Tokunbo vehicles into the village through Idiroko land border from Benin Republic.
The operatives, who got an intelligence report about the activity were said to have stormed the village in search of the smugglers.
They reportedly succeeded in impounding one of the smuggled vehicles, a Toyota Tundra pickup.
But some hoodlums also suspected to be smugglers were said to have barricaded roads leading to the village with various objects, to prevent the customs officers from taking the impounded vehicle.
The action triggered sporadic shooting into the air by the operatives to scare the alleged hoodlums away, and to secure their own lives.
It was in this melee, that a stray bullet reportedly hit a yet-to-be identified male victim, leading to his death.
The victim was said to have gone to a tailor’s shop to collect his cloth and was on his way home when the bullet hit him.
The state Command Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident saying it was a ‘sad development’.
“In our command, we value human life and we will not deliberately do anything to take human life. It is a very sad incident,” he said.
