Driver Blames Cows As One Killed, 21 Injured In Osun Road Crash

A road accident along the Ilesha/Ile-Ife Expressway in Osun State has left one person dead while 21 persons sustained varying degree of injuries.

The accident was confirmed by Odogiyan Aderibigbe, Head of Operations, Ife Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps, on Monday.

The victims, it was learnt, were on board a luxury bus travelling from Kaduna to Lagos on Sunday when the bus was involved in the mishap. A total of 69 persons were said to be on board.

According to Aderibigbe, the driver of the ill-fated bus explained to FRSC officials at the scene of the incident that the crash occurred due to some cows which were obstructing a part of the road.

He noted that the driver said in an attempt to avoid running over a jeep in front of him, he had to manoeuver the bus which lost control in the process and fell by its side.

Aderibigbe said: “The luxurious bus with the registration number SMK 667 XR coming from Kaduna and heading towards Lagos was involved in an accident. 69 passengers were on board.

“The driver of the vehicle said some cows were blocking part of the road and in order not to hit a jeep ahead of him, he manoeuvred the vehicle but eventually lost control of the bus.

“The vehicle fell and laid by its side. I didn’t see any cow when I got there. But that was what he told me. 69 people were on board. But 21 people were injured. Three others were trapped under the vehicle.

“We used crane to lift the vehicle. Out of the three that were trapped, two people were rescued alive. Doctors confirmed the last person dead in the hospital.

“Policemen from Osu and some soldiers that were travelling along the road at the time the accident occurred joined in the rescue operation. Those injured were taken to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesha and OAUTHC, Ile Ife for treatment.”
