Former Barcelona midfielder, Arda Turan, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
Turan, who also played for Atletico Madrid in La Liga, was sentenced for carrying a weapon without a license, which he then fired inside a hospital.
However, the Turkish international, who currently plays for Basaksehir in the Super Lig, won’t go to jail immediately, with the sentence suspended for a period of five years after his appeal.
He got into an altercation with a popular singer, Berkan Sahin, who accused the player of harassing his wife in 2018.
Turan was acquitted of the harassment charge, but he was sentenced for causing bodily harm, assault, the illegal possession of weapons and firing the said weapon in the hospital, where Sahin had gone to after the incident.
During the trial, the player claimed he fired the gun accidental.
“Thank God, Turkish Justice has considered it a shameful defamation,” Turan said in a statement to NTV.
