Dr Mohammed Kawu, the acting Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Wisdom Acka, an official of the FCTA Information Department, on Thursday.
According to the statement, a number of Kawu’s family members have also contracted the virus.
The statement quoted Kawu as speaking from his treatment centre at the Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja, on Thursday, that he experienced feverish condition 12 days ago.
He explained that the symptoms he felt triggered him to take a COVID-19 test, which returned positive.
Kawu advised the public to be cautious during this period, insisting that COVID-19 is real.
“I want every Nigerians, as I’ve always told them in the media, to know that this thing is real and anybody can be infected, especially those of us that are on the frontline.
“The disease can be fatal and it is important that everyone follows all the extant guidelines of handwashing or sanitising, maintain social distancing, wearing of facial covering and staying at home.
“So, my appeal to everyone in the society is that we must all be part and parcel of this fight against the COVID-19. Everybody must take personal responsibility to ensure that he or she protects his or herself and his or her family.”
