Nigeria’s senior male basketball team, D’Tigers, got their 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup campaign off to a losing start, after going down to Russia in their Group B opener on Saturday.
The Russians won by 82 points to 77 against D’Tigers, in both country’s first ever meeting at the World Cup.
Russia took the first quarter by 18 points to 13 while the second quarter ended 22 points apiece.
In the third quarter, D’Tigers fought back to edge it by 23 points to 18 before the Russians wrapped it up in the fourth quarter, 24 – 19.
D’Tigers will hope to bounce back from the loss, when they face former World Cup and Olympic champion, Argentina, on Monday.
Russia will also take on South Korea in their second group game on Monday.
