Furious, Senator Dino Melaye Thursday accused online investigative news site, Saharareporters of “blackmail and intimidation”. The website, run by a former students union president and activist, Omoyele Sowore, is a gadfly to Nigerian political establishment, reporting on issues of corruption and financial crimes by public office holders. It had run series of reports on Senator Melaye, just as it continues to do on Senate President Bukola Saraki. Melaye said Saharareporters “is a threat to democracy with their continued act of insubordination.” His accusation was referred to Senate committees on Ethics, Privileges & Public Petitions, I.C.T & Cybercrime and Judiciary Human Rights to investigate. The committees are expected to make a report in three weeks. There are reports the Senate is currently considering a bill that prescribes jail terms for offensive posts to the social media.
