Unknown gunmen have kidnapped the sister-in-law of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, in Asaba, the state capital.
The victim, Elizabeth, who is the immediate younger sister to Dame Edith, the governor’s wife, was allegedly approached by a gang of young men at Temple Clinic junction, along Awai road near Government House on Monday night in Asaba, who then whisked her away in their waiting vehicle.
She was said to be driving a black Jeep when she was kidnapped by the gang who, according to a source, were armed with dangerous weapons.
“They shot sporadically into the air to scare away people. Out of fear, the lady, who was ordered to come out of her vehicle, jumped into their waiting vehicle,” the source said.
A top government official at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday said the incident has left Okowa, his wife and her entire family traumatised, leading to the low key celebration of Delta at 28.
The source said for security reasons the matter was not placed on red alert but that intelligence gathering had since commenced to rescue her.
However, Adeyinka Adeleke, the Commissioner of Police in the state, has denied knowledge of the incident.
