Shedrack Edinwo, a 75-year-old man who raped a 14-year-old girl in Rivers State, has entered into an out-of-court settlement with his victim’s family.
According to reports, he has negotiated the payment of N380,000 monthly until February 2020.
Edinwo is said to have perpetrated the act at Kendox Medical Services, where he had gone for his HIV treatment about one week ago. He had reportedly pounced on the victim who works as a sales girl at the facility.
As part of the agreement, Edinwo will be responsible for the treatment of the teenager. Charges against him will be dropped if she is found to be free of the virus after her treatment.
Rufus Felix, father of the victim, said he accepted the settlement because the rapist’s family had come to plead with him.
“I wanted to take the matter to court but because Mr Shedrack’s (accused) family came to plead that it was temptation,” he said.
“And because of Shedrack’s health, I decided to accept the plea.
“And because of my work and the kind of work I do, I don’t have the time to be going to the (Police) station, it will affect my work. So I decided to accept the plea and forgive Shedrack, that’s how it happened. Nobody advised me to collect money or bribe,” he said.
A copy of the settlement showed that the signatories included Ejinwo; counsel for the suspect, Amaechi Enere; counsel for the victim, Ibe Ukagha; State PRO, Behind Bars Initiative, Emmanuel Wokoma; Ogbonna Asonye; and Felix.
It read in part, “That Chief Shedrack N. Ejinwo will be totally responsible for cost of all medical treatment of Miss Gift Felix from now till February 10, 2020, when there will be a final check on her.
“That upon the final check of Miss Gift Felix on February 10, 2020, if/and having been certified medically fit, Miss Gift and her family will withdraw the petition against Chief Shedrack Ejinwo.”
