‘I’m Relieved’, Mother Says After Son Is Killed By Vigilante Leader

By Adebayo Williams

A woman, Toyin Akintayo, has expressed relief , rather than grief, at her son’s death. Her son, 23-year-old Yusuf Azeez, was killed by an accidental discharge from the gun of a vigilante leader in their residence on CAC Street, Oke Aro, Ogun State around 8pm on Tuesday. Narrating how the incident happened, Akintayo told Punch Metro that her son had arrived home on that day around 6pm and asked for his dinner. She handed him N200 to buy which upset him. He reportedly threw the money at her and said it was too small for him to get anything filling. Akintayo said he had smashed a bottle and threatened to kill her. Out of fear, she had called Quadri Adeshina, the vigilante leader.

Adesina was on the scene with two other men when a scuffle broke out. It was during the scuffle the gun went off striking Azeez in the thigh. He died at a hospital. Akintola said his gang members had come to threaten her that he would pay for his death.

Describing his death as a relief, she said Azeez had been a source of disgrace to the family. She said he had been arrested by the police for several crimes in the past. She said he had seriously wounded a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, while they were living in the Idimu area of Lagos. She said she had paid an N85,000 rent for a barber shop for him but he never used it till it expired.

“His death is a relief to me and the family. He was too troublesome. There was a time he beat up an Oodua Peoples Cogress member while we were living in Idimu (Lagos). I spent a lot of money on the man’s treatment.

“A few weeks ago, he fought in Agege. He was seriously injured. He had been arrested many times by the police for several offences.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The Divisional Police Officer of the station, CSP Abioye Shittu, led operatives to the scene and the suspect has been arrested. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
