LaLiga has written to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), requesting that this month’s El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid be moved to Madrid, due to growing protests and political tensions in Catalonia.
Nine Catalan separatist leaders on Monday, bagged between nine and 13-year jail term, because of their role in an illegal referendum and subsequent failed independence bid. It sparked protests and clashes across the region.
The fixture was scheduled to take place on October 26 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.
However, the Spanish football league is seeking to reverse the fixture, due to ongoing unrest throughout the autonomous region.
The second meeting between the two biggest LaLiga teams is scheduled to take place in Madrid in March next year.
