It was gathered that Sunday, a charcoal businessman, had accused Fatunla, 35, of having a romantic affair with his former wife, Tadeni.
Both Sunday and Tadeni were married and had two children, before their marriage collapsed.
However, when the suspect discovered that Tadeni and Fatunla were just family friends, he apologised for wrongly accusing the late chief.
Sunday pleaded with Fatunla to use his position as a chief in Ikole Ekiti, to plead with those he claimed seized his charcoal.
However, while accompanying him to where his charcoal was seized, the suspect allegedly connived with some persons to abduct Fatunla and his ex-wife.
According to reports, the victims were tied to trees, and Fatunla was beaten with cutlasses, before he was set ablaze.
But the woman escaped by the time it was her turn to be punished.
Sunday and his accomplices were reportedly arrested by vigilantes in Patigi, Kwara State, while trying to escape to Benue, where they are from.
It was revealed that the deceased’s mobile phone was found in the main suspect’s pocket.
