Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, has called on Nigerians to ensure they hold their political leaders accountable over their decisions and the state of the country generally.
Senator Saraki said this in a statement issued by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in commemoration of Inauguration Day, which held on Wednesday across the federation.
The Senate President noted that Nigerians must remain vigilant so that the elected leaders would always act in the best interest of the country.
The statement read: “The followers should hold their leaders accountable and ensure they always act in the best interest of the people and country.”
Noting that democracy is always about the citizens, Senator Saraki implored the newly inaugurated leaders to use their tenure to ensure the upward development of the country.
He also urged Nigerians to embrace democracy as the best form of government, saying its positives outweigh the negatives.
The statement read: “Democracy is about the people and the people should use democracy to achieve social justice, equity, inclusiveness and economic self-reliance.
“The benefits of a constitutional democracy far outweigh the challenges that have confronted the country since the return of democracy.
“It is my hope that every Nigerian will look back at how far we have come in the last 20 years and resolve to continue to preserve our democracy — not minding the observed lapses in the operation of the system.”
