The Office of the Public Defender, in Lagos state, has said it would write the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Rahman Bello, over the alleged rape of an unnamed admission seeker to the university. Omotola Rotimi, OPD director, said so, according to news reports.
Nigeria Newsbreak enquiry from the leadership of the Unilag chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, about the alleged rapist, Afeez Baruwa, who claimed to be a part-time lecturer, did not yield any result. “I have never heard his name before and none of our colleagues could identify him. If truly he is a part time lecturer, then he could be in the Distance Learning Institute, DLI”, said a senior lecturer who preferred to be anonymous.
The suspect was alleged to be a friend to the victim’s father, who sought his assistance to help his daughter secure admission to the school. Upon the girl’s visit to Baruwa in a study hall on the university campus, the latter allegedly raped her. The victim reported to her father, who got Baruwa arrested. Medical examination was also said to have shown Baruwa committed the offence, but the police are yet to reveal the details of their investigation. The management of the Unilag have also not responded to the issue.
