Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president, joined other leaders to salute ex-President Shehu Shagari on his 92nd birthday. Osinbajo said Shagari offered selfless service, leadership and steadfast commitment to Nigeria. Also, Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Nigeria’s president, described Shagari as “a man of honour and unmatched dignity, who left enduring legacy as President”. “You diligently served your nation as a teacher, parliamentarian and President”, Jonathan said, adding Shagari continues “to serve … in your old age, as an elder statesman and sage who calmly offers his wise counsel on national issues”. Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the House of Representatives, said Shagari “is an embodiment of humility and selfless service, a father of all and pillar of support.” Ex-President Shagari, born 25 February, 1925, ruled Nigeria between 1979 and 1983. He had served in the first republic government of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
