Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday barricaded the Edo State House of Assembly complex in Benin City, the state capital.
This comes 24 hours after Yekini Idiaye, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, was removed from office by the state lawmakers.
Dozens of the security officials stormed the complex on Thursday morning while patrol vehicles were stationed there.
The police officers were led to the Assembly by Ayoola Ajala, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).
Police officers at the Assembly include operatives attached to the Police Mobile Force and Operation Thunderstorm.
It was learnt that the action by the police was in a bid to prevent an attack on the complex.
Personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also arrived at the complex shortly after the police arrived.
Idiaye was removed as Deputy Speaker on Wednesday on grounds of alleged gross misconduct.
Idiaye and four other state lawmakers had on Sunday pledged their support for Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who will face Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the incumbent state governor, in the Edo governorship election scheduled for 19 September.
