Premier League heavyweights, Liverpool and Chelsea, will on Wednesday face off in this year’s UEFA Super Cup clash in Istanbul, Turkey.
Liverpool go into the tie as UEFA Champions League winners, while Chelsea are the UEFA Europa Cup holders.

Liverpool Are The First Club From England To Win The UEFA Super Cup
Liverpool became the first English club to win the UEFA Super Cup in 1977.
The Reds got to feature in the Super Cup after they won the Champions League (known then as the European Cup) in 1977.
Played over two legs, Liverpool thrashed German club Hamburg 7-1 on aggregate to emerge winners. Liverpool held Hamburg to a first-leg 1-1 away draw before smashing their opponents 6-0 in the second-leg at Anfield.
Liverpool Are The Last English Club To Win The UEFA Super Cup
The last English club to win the UEFA Super Cup was Liverpool back in 2005, following their Champions League triumph same year.
Liverpool faced Russian club CSKA Moscow and won 3-1 after extra-time, to land their third title.
CSKA got the opportunity to play in the Super Cup after they were crowned champions of the Europa Cup (known then as the UEFA Cup).
Chelsea Are The Only London Club To Win The Super Cup
In 1998, Chelsea became the first and only club from London to win the UEFA Super Cup.
The Blues beat then Champions League winners, Real Madrid, 1-0 to secure their only Super Cup title.
Chelsea got to face Real Madrid in the Super Cup tie after they won the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, also in 1998.
Liverpool Are The Most Successful English Club In The Super Cup
Liverpool have won the UEFA Super Cup three times, making them the most successful English club to have won the trophy.
They won it in 1977 (7-1 aggregate win against Hamburg), 2001 (3-2 against Bayern Munich) and 2005 (3-1 against CSKA Moscow).
Other English clubs who have won the Super Cup are Manchester United (1991), Nottingham Forest (1979), Aston Villa (1982) and Chelsea (1998).
Both Liverpool And Chelsea Have Lost Twice In The Super Cup
After winning the 1977 Super Cup, Liverpool lost the 1978 edition, losing 4-3 on aggregate to Anderlecht of Belgium.
The first-leg in Belgium ended 3-1 to Anderlecht while Liverpool won the second-leg 2-1 at Anfield, which was not enough.
Liverpool’s second defeat in the Super Cup was in 1984, when they lost 2-0 to Serie A giants Juventus.
Liverpool went into the tie as Champions League winners and Juventus as Cup Winners’ Cup holders.
The game was decided in a one-legged affair in Turin due to fixture congestion.
For Chelsea, after winning the 1998 Super Cup, their first defeat came in 2012 when they were hammered 4-1 by Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea faced Atletico after winning the Champions League, with the Spanish side coming into the tie as Europa Cup champions.
In 2013, Chelsea again contested the Super Cup after winning the Europa Cup but lost to Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
The Blues lost 5-4 on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 2-2.
