Farid, elder brother to Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, passed away on Saturday.
The elder Zidane’s death was confirmed by Madrid on their verified Twitter handle, just as first-team squad held a minute’s silence ahead of Saturday’s training in Montreal, Canada.
“All members of the Real Madrid first-team squad held a minute’s silence ahead of training in Montreal following the passing of Farid Zidane, the brother of our coach, Zinedine Zidane,” the club wrote on their handle.
Zidane left the club’s pre-season training camp in Canada on Friday, with the club only saying it was for personal reasons.
And according to English newspaper, The Sun, it emerged the French legend’s brother, 54, passed away after losing his battle with cancer.
The younger Zidane’s son, Luca, who had only just joined Racing Santander on loan, also requested he be allowed to leave his new club to be with his family.
It is believed Farid passed away early this morning surrounded by his family.
Zidane, 47, is believed to have made it back to be with his brother in time to see him before he died.
Real have given their coach all the time he needs to deal with his family affairs before he needs to report back for pre-season.
The squad will continue to go through their training programme under the guidance of the Frenchman’s assistant, David Bettoni.
