Some members of House of Representatives have on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to declare June 12 as a national holiday to honour MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election. The members also resolved that the honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) be conferred on the late politician. Sani Zorro, representing Jigawa State moved the motion, which was supported by majority of the members. He argued that honouring Abiola was the only way to prove that his sacrifice for democracy was not in vain. “They share so much in common in terms of popularity and widespread appeal”, Zorro said urging President Muhammmadu Buhari to leave a legacy that Nigerians would always appreciate him (Buhari) for. Another member, Anayo Nnebe (Anambra State), faulted Ibrahim Babangida for annulling the 1993 election. He said “no explanations can change the fact that the winner of an election was denied his victory.” He added that June 12 should be observed as a “national and not regional holiday” in Nigeria.
