Rivers Govt Shuts Down 437 Private Schools

The Rivers State Government has shut down 437 private schools after they were deemed not good enough by the State Ministry of Education.

The ban was handed down by a committee led by Prof. Ozo Mekuri Ndimele, Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, to screen, accredit and approve the schools to operate.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku, speaking on the resumption of schools said last Friday that the directive on the ban of unapproved schools still subsists. He warned that anyone caught operating unapproved schools in the state will face appropriate sanctions of the law.

He said the state had made provisions for the maintenance and operation of pubic schools in the state. He also warned heads of public primary and secondary schools in the state not to collect any fee from pupils and students.
