Rohr Hands Mikel Free Role

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has handed captain Mikel Obi a free role in the Eagles attack. The Chelsea midfielder had been planned to be the defensive midfielder but a u-turn has seen Rohr hand him the role that made him only second to Lionel Messi at the youth World Cup in Netherlands in 2005. He also played the same role in the team that won Bronze at the Rio Olympics.

“Mikel will play in an attacking position under the new coach, not the holding midfield role he plays for his club,” an official, who watched the team’s training behind closed doors on Thursday said.

Mikel, speaking about the game, said the math offers the side a chance to start afresh and correct all errors and concentrate on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“This is a new team and a new direction as we want to make sure we qualify for the World Cup,” he said.
