John Mikel Obi is set to leave English giants Chelsea in January, reports say. The Super Eagles captain is said to be in advanced talks with French side Olympique de Marseille. Mikel has been out of the Chelsea squad since Antonio Conte took over in the summer. The second longest serving Chelsea player, after John Terry, is rumoured to have fallen out of Conte’s plans for featuring for Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Mikel’s rumoured move to France was also echoed by Eagles’ boss Gernot Rohr. The German told Europe 1 that the 29-year-old told him a move was imminent.
“I saw him in London. He is in advanced discussions with Marseille,” Rohr said.
There had also been reports that his wage demands had scuppered proposed move to other European sides notably Valencia, but it will appear the Super Eagles skipper will be headed to France according to Rohr.
Mikel has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Champions League titles in his 11 years with the Blues.
