The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, a civil society organisation, CSO, has instituted a legal suit against the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, and Sule Kazaure, its Director General, for not responding to the allegations of NYSC exemption certificate by the Minister. Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Finance.
The Minister was accused by Premium Times, an online newspaper in July 2018 of skipping the mandatory one-year as well as falsifying the exemption certificate she currently possesses.
The anti-corruption themed civil society group dragged the NYSC to court the government parastatal failed to address the issue within the seven-day ultimatum issued by the group.
SERAP, who case was filed by the organisation’s lawyer, Bamisope Adeyanju, at the Federal High Court, Lagos, with suit number FHC/L/CS/1369/18, is seeking an order of mandamus against the NYSC and Kazaure.
The CSO asked the court to declare Kazuare’s inaction in providing relevant details on the factual status of the Minister`s NYSC activities as a violation against the Freedom of Information Act, 2011.
According to the suit file, the plaintiff urged the court to demand that the NYSC immediately provide “specific documents and information on Mrs. Kemi Adeosun’s application for the National Youth Service Corps’ Exemption Certificate and to publish widely, including on a dedicated and on the NYSC website, any such information.”
The suit, which was filed on Tuesday, was yet to be assigned a date for its hearing by the court.
