A Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi on Tuesday, ordered the remand of seven men, over alleged membership of an unlawful society. The court said they should be kept in prison pending legal advice.
The suspects are; Kater Monyo, Ngutswen Eric, Terver Therese, Shater Orduen, Terver Faki, Igbalagh Aondosoo and Sunday Avon.
The presiding Magistrate, Ajuma Igama, who did not take the plea of the defendants, said the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.
She ordered the police to return the case file to the Office of the Benue Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Igama adjourned the case until September 20 for mention.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Sgt. Ato Godwin, said the suspects were arrested by a police surveillance patrol team, led by DSP. Husseini Idasho on August 18 from their hideouts.
Ato further told the court that the suspects, who were members of ”Black Skull”, were arrested while holding an initiation ceremony.
He said the police recovered two exercise books containing notes and insignia about the ”Black Skull” confraternity.
He added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11(2) of the Abduction, Kidnapping, Hostage taking, Secret cult and similar activities ( Prohibition) Law of Benue State 2017.
