The Ogun State Police Command has accused soldiers of the Nigerian Army from 81 Division of dragging a patient out of bed before stabbing him to death with a bayonet at Isheri Olofin, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun States.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the police spokesperson, said a fight had broke out during the celebration of the Isheri Day Festival on Monday, making the soldiers, drafted to Kara Market, abandon their post and storm the area.

He said the soldiers had started shooting in the air during which one Damilare Adelani and two others were shot dead. The incident caused a reprisal with residents wounding one soldier.

He said the soldiers had rushed their colleague to a hospital, where they threatened a doctor to abandon the patient he was attending to and attend to theirs. He added that while this was ongoing, the soldiers dragged the patient off the bed and stabbed him to death with a bayonet attached to the muzzle of their gun.

Oyeyemi said Bashir Makama, the Commissioner of Police, had ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter involving soldiers believed to be from Ikeja Cantonment.

A statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Clement Abiade, had denied military involvement in the killing, saying instead a soldier was injured.
