A lecturer at the University of Benin, UNIBEN, Godwin Omofunwa, was on Wednesday shot dead by some suspected armed robbers in Benin.
The lecturer, from the Department of Education, was said to have been shot after the robbers stormed his residence at Evbuomore quarters, in the early hours of Wednesday and dispossessed him of his belongings.
Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, the state commissioner of police, said one of the robbers was killed during a gun battle with the police while others escaped.
"Sadly, Godwin O. Omofonwa, a lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Benin, died as a result of gunshot wounds he received from the robbers" he said.
Three mobile phones belonging to Omofonwa and a Nokia phone belonging to one Precious were recovered from the deceased suspect.
Other items recovered from the robbers included a single-barrel gun, iron cutter, one live and 12 expended cartridges and a torch.
Kokumo disclosed that he police had been on the trail of the gang which had been troubling the vicinity.
