Gauff, who is also an American, was inspired to play tennis by the success of the Williams sisters, had reached the girls’ singles final at the US Open at age 13.
\Meanwhile Serena has been handed a tough draw as she continues her pursuit of Margaret Court’s all-time grand slam singles record of 24.
The 38-year-old could face 18th seed, Julia Goerges, in the third round, in a repeat of last year’s semi-final, and potentially defending champion,, Angelique Kerber, in the fourth round.
Kerber defeated Williams a year ago to win her third grand slam title.
The 23 Grand Slam winner could face current world number one, Ashleigh Barty, in the quarter-final.
