DCP Abba Kyari, the Commander, Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has debunked accusations levelled against the unit by the Nigerian Bar Association, Edo State chapter.
In a statement published on his Facebook wall, Kyari said contrary to claims by the legal association that he had led his team to release suspected kidnappers of Godwin Aigbe, the Enogie of Ukiri, near Benin, he was not in the state on the said date.
Kyari said he had been in Katsina and Kaduna states leading the war against kidnapping. He claimed that another unit from Abuja may have been responsible for releasing the kidnappers.
“I have not stepped my foot in Benin City in the last 2 years hence I was Surprised to see in social media today that I led a team to Benin City to release kidnappers while I was in Kaduna and Katsina States all these while fighting kidnappers.
“We are not Linked to this case in any way because my Unit is not handling we have not taken over the case from the State Police Command as mentioned by the false statement,” he wrote.
He said the unit’s legal department will take action against the NBA in Edo State.
He however said the legal association had promised to retract the statement.
