“From a sporting standpoint Neymar is one of the best in the world. And from a marketing and sponsorship standpoint, the club would have made a jump.
Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has reacted to his contract situation at the La Liga club.
The club’s president Josep Bartomeu, had revealed last week, that the Argentine could leave the club next June if he wants to, due to a clause in his contract.
But he said the club would want the 32-year-old to stay until 2021, when his deal expires.
Following the revelation, it was reported that David Beckham, owner of Major League Soccer franchise, Inter Miami, has approached Messi over becoming the leading face of the club.
But the Barcelona record goal-scorer, has said he wants to remain at the club.
“This is my home and I don’t want to leave, but I want to win,” Messi told Diario SPORT in an exclusive interview.
Reports suggested over the summer that Messi, who is said to be influential in determining players signed to the club, had told the board to re-sign former teammate, Neymar, from Paris Saint-Germain.
However, after weeks of negotiation between Barcelona and PSG, the Brazilian was forced to stay in France, with the Ligue 1 giants saying the Catalan club failed to meet their demands for the forward.
Messi denied that he pressured the club into approaching PSG for Neymar. He also said he was not sure if his club did everything to bring back the former Santos star.
“I would have loved it if Neymar came. Honestly, I don’t know if the club has done everything possible to sign him, but I’m sure it’s not easy to negotiate with PSG.
“I’m not disappointed. We have a spectacular squad and we can compete for everything, even without Ney.
“We never asked for Neymar’s signing, we simply gave our opinion. Am I in charge of things? It has been shown that is not the case,” he added.
The player, who has not played for Barcelona this season due to injury, will also miss this weekend’s league game against Valencia at Camp Nou.
